What Will AI Mean For The Future Of Christianity?

We are living through something our grandparents could have never imagined. You can pull out your phone and have something like ChatGPT write you a sermon, answer your theological questions, create images, compose music, imitate voices, summarize books, and so much more.

We have to ask these questions now. Is AI going to help the church? Or will it hurt it? What does it mean for our faith?

Only God knows what the future holds but I think we are going to discover the value of what is real. John 1:14 tells us “and the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” God came near.

Jesus ate with people, touched people, cried with people, sat with them, listened to them, and called them by name.

The relational and embodied nature of Christianity will matter more than ever in these times.

AI can give you an answer about something but it can’t sit beside you in a hospital room. It can generate a prayer but it can’t pray it with you. It can give you information about scripture but it can’t be your church family.

We were never created to just consume information. We were created for relationship with God and with each other.

You can consume Christian content without actually being part of the body of Christ and this is what we have to be careful about.

Visit the sick, call a friend, eat dinner with somebody, invite someone into your home, sit with the grieving, pray with one another, open the scriptures together, know people’s names, and be the kind of Christian who embodies the love of Christ in your life.

The deepest truth we have isn’t in any technology, it’s in Jesus Christ.
